Ever feel like your mood changes out of nowhere?

One minute you’re fine… the next you’re overwhelmed, irritable, anxious, or flat.
If that’s you, I want you to know something important…
Your mood isn’t random, and it’s not “just in your head.”
There are real, physical reasons behind mood swings. And when we understand the root cause, things can start to shift in a powerful way.
As a naturopath, I see this every day - women doing their best to hold it all together, while their body is quietly asking for support.
What Are Mood Swings, Really?
Mood swings are changes in your emotional state that can feel sudden, intense, or unpredictable.
They might look like:
Irritability or snapping over small things
Anxiety or feeling on edge
Low mood or lack of motivation
Emotional sensitivity or overwhelm
Energy highs and crashes
And often, they’re not just emotional… They can be physical and even spiritual.
What Causes Mood Swings?
There’s rarely just one cause. Mood is influenced by a combination of physical, emotional, spiritual and lifestyle factors.
Here are some of the most common root drivers I see in clinic:
1. Hormonal Imbalances
Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone can significantly impact mood especially around your cycle.
This is why you might notice:
PMS mood changes
Anxiety before your period
Emotional highs and lows
2. Blood Sugar Instability
If your blood sugar is on a rollercoaster, your mood will be too.
Skipping meals, relying on caffeine, or eating high-sugar foods add to that Perimenopause and wow your in for a ride as the hormones that normally regulate things are all over the shop up and down … this can lead to:
Irritability
Anxiety
Energy crashes
Brain fog
3. Gut Health Imbalances
Your gut and brain are deeply connected.
In fact, a large portion of your neurotransmitters are produced in your gut - around 90–95% of serotonin (your “feel-good” neurotransmitter), about 50% of dopamine (happy and energised), along with significant amounts of GABA (calming) produced by gut microbes, and acetylcholine (Memory and learning) also produced locally in the gut.
When your gut is out of balance, you may experience:
Low mood
Anxiety
Poor stress resilience
Poor memory
Low motivation
4. Chronic Stress
When your body is in a constant state of stress, or you experienced trauma in the past your nervous system can become dysregulated.
This can show up as:
Feeling overwhelmed easily
Trouble switching off
Emotional reactivity
Burnout
How to Support and Balance Your Mood Naturally
The good news? Your body is designed to come back into balance when given the right support.
Here are some simple but powerful foundations:
Nourish Your Body Consistently - Eat balanced meals with protein, healthy fats, and fibre every 3–4 hours to stabilise blood sugar.
Support Your Nervous System - by slowing down where you can
Look After Your Gut - by eating clean
Prioritise Sleep - in bed by 10pm every night
Address the Root Cause - this is where naturopathic medicine comes in
Address the spiritual causes to mood disorders - This is where Jesus can come in to help you.
A Different Approach to Mood Support
This is where I work a little differently.
As a naturopath, I support women with complex and chronic health concerns by looking deeper than just symptoms. We investigate what’s actually driving your mood changes - whether that’s hormonal, gut-related, nutritional, or stress-based.
At the same time, my work is grounded in my Christian faith.
What that means for you:
I combine evidence-informed naturopathic care with a faith-led perspective
I don’t use spiritual or New Age practices
I create a space that is safe, supportive, and anchored in truth
You don’t need to share my beliefs to work with me - but everything I do is guided by compassion, integrity, and a desire to see you truly well.
If you’re ready to understand your mood on a deeper level and get personalised support, I’d love to walk alongside you.
