Ways to support digestion while still enjoying the Christmas season

Let’s be honest, Christmas and digestion don’t always feel like the best match.

Suddenly, there are more meals, more treats, different foods, later nights, and a lot more “just one more bite.” And somewhere in the middle of all that, many people start feeling uncomfortable, bloated, sluggish, or frustrated with their gut.

This was a very rich meal I had in Scotland. (haggis mashed potatoes, mashed turnip and Guinness with a creamy whiskey sauce!)

The first thing to know is your digestive system isn’t misbehaving - you're stuffing it full of things it's not used to.  It doesn’t need psychological punishment to feel better. It needs support.

Why Digestion Often Feels Off at Christmas

Our gut loves rhythm. Regular meals, familiar foods, consistent sleep, and a calm nervous system all help digestion work smoothly.

Christmas disrupts all of that.

There’s more food variety, more sugar and alcohol, irregular meal times, eating later at night, and often more stress mixed in…even if it’s happy stress. Add in rushing, eating on the go, or eating while distracted, and it’s no surprise our digestion can feel a little overwhelmed.

How to Support Digestion Without Restriction

Here are a few simple natural ways to support your gut while still enjoying the season:

🎄 Slow down when you eat

Even taking a few breaths before meals or sitting down properly can make a big difference. Digestion works best when the body feels calm.

🎄Base meals on protein

Keeping the focus on protein each meal and also snacks helps keep blood sugar steadier and supports smoother digestion.Meat, quinoa, tofu, peanut butter, and protein powder are your best sources.

🎄Stay hydrated especially between meals

Water supports digestion and bowel regularity. Sipping between meals is often more helpful than large amounts during them.

🎄Move gently after eating

A relaxed walk after meals can help reduce bloating and support gut motility without stressing the body.

🎄Notice how food makes you feel without judgement

Instead of labelling foods as “good” or “bad,” get curious. What feels nourishing, gives you good energy, crashes your energy after eating it.  Your body will tell you what to avoid if you start to listen.

🎄Load up on salad and significantly reduce the carb component of each meal

Still have carbs but instead of having ¾ of the meal carbs have ¼ of the meal carbs, ¼ protein and ½ veggies or salad.

🎄Remember that sugar is a treat and should be treated that way

Only have dessert once a day not 5x a day - this takes self control when all the chocolates are circling around but what are your other options? Eat it, feel it, and see it later on the hips and belly LOL 🙂 or enjoy it and don't worry about it .. I'll leave that up to you.

🎄How to aid digestion trick

If you're having trouble digesting - one of the best things to do is have 2 ml of apple cider vinegar before meals in 30 ml of water.

Enjoying Food Without the Stress Spiral

One of the biggest stressors around food at Christmas is the mental load - guilt, overthinking, or feeling like you need to “make up for it” later.

However, if you allow yourself some treats, keep up your exercise, and choose healthy options there really is no reason to feel bad.

It's Christmas! Enjoy it in a balanced way.

It’s when we are all or nothing that problems arise, so do your best to take a balanced approach to Christmas this year xx
